Soundtrack for a film directed by Matteo Cremonesi

The forty fragments are generated by computer with Pure Data programming that controls in real time through the "Universal System Exclusive Messages" the Yamaha TX802 synthesizer (rack-module version of the DX7mkII), to generate an optimized audio signal for CV/gate to pilot oscillator and filter inputs of a Micromoog and generate dynamic frequency modulations on an analog machine.

Matteo Cremonesi’s practice starts from observation and the obsessive, accurate study of everyday objects, usually technological devices. Using the camera he examines and decomposes those objects as a doctor on the operating table. After the operation takes place, we can still identify those objects and their function but we eventually find ourselves in an unexpected world.
Moving closer, the lens collects that thin layer of air that lies between the surface of the object and the lens itself, and immediately what was once a printer, a ceramic vase, a mirror, a curtain, is now something new, fascinating, unexplored.
Matteo Cremonesi looks at these design objects and industrial materials as a sculptor does by falling in love with shapes and their plasticity and can do nothing but record them, take a picture of them and, in an act of gratitude, show them to us through his eyes.

The work that Matteo proposed for Conversation Piece consists of several elements in which we find all the themes that are dear to him. In the first place, photography, but a kind of photography that approaches sculpture; in fact, the titles of his photographic series contain the word “Scultpure”, as a prefix, followed by the name of the photographed object, stating that what we are looking at is a sculpture, no longer an ordinary object. Matteo’s work has an exploratory attitude: often leaving the studio, he makes long wanderings in the city of Milan at night and brings home some of the objects he finds around. Some other times he makes videos that insist on the sculptural quality of the object portrayed. This is the case of the film on display “Mono”, which, sounded by Flavio Scutti, visually explores a copy machine and returns its sculptural nature back to us.
Matteo will also present a sculpture lying on the ground and composed by his notebooks, which the viewer can observe or, once we overcome the fear, take in our hands and browse.


Il lavoro di Matteo Cremonesi nasce dall’osservazione, dallo studio meticoloso ed ossessivo di oggetti quotidiani e banali, dispositivi tecnologici che, come sul tavolo operatorio vengono scomposti e analizzati nelle loro parti attraverso la macchina fotografica. Attraverso l’obiettivo, riconosciamo l’oggetto in questione e la sua funzione ma allo stesso tempo ci sembra di trovarci in un mondo nuovo. L’avvicinarsi dell’obiettivo, attraverso l’uso prospettico, raccoglie quel leggero strato di aria che si trova tra la superficie dell’oggetto e la lente e immediatamente quello che prima era una stampante, un vaso di ceramica, uno specchio o una tenda, diventa qualcosa di nuovo e affascinante, inesplorato. Matteo Cremonesi guarda a questi oggetti di design, questi prodotti dell’industria come uno scultore che si innamora delle forme semplicemente per la loro plasticità e non può far altro che registrarle, fotografandole e, in un atto di gratitudine mostrarle a noi attraverso i suoi occhi.

Il lavoro che Matteo ha pensato per Conversation Piece, si compone di diversi elementi, nei quali sono presenti tutte le tematiche a lui care. In primo luogo la fotografia, ma una fotografia che si avvicina alla scultura; molte delle sue serie fotografiche racchiudono infatti nel titolo la dicitura “Scultpure”, a mo’ di prefisso, seguito dal nome dell’oggetto fotografato, andando ad affermare che quello che stiamo guardando è una scultura, non più un oggetto qualunque. Il lavoro di Matteo è di tipo esplorativo: spesso lasciando lo studio compie lunghe peregrinazioni notturne nella città di Milano. Il risultato di questi viaggi sono appropriazioni di piccoli manufatti trovati, altre volte video, che insistono anch’essi sulla qualità scultorea dell’oggetto ritratto, come nel caso del film in mostra “Mono”, che, sonorizzato da Flavio Scutti, esplora una fotocopiatrice e ci restituisce in modo ancora diverso dalla fotografia questo mondo scultoreo. Infine una scultura a terra composta dai suoi taccuini, che lo spettatore può osservare nella loro forma, oppure, superata la naturale timidezza, prendere e sfogliare.
